Mourning Michael Murphy


On Friday, June 6 Mount Greenwood resident Michael Murphy, 31, died tragically after being struck by a van near 112th and Kedzie. Murphy was retrieving his dog after stopping traffic.

Murphy was apparently waving his thanks after stopping both southbound and northbound lanes of traffic when a van a few cars back in the southbound lane sped around the stopped traffic striking both Michael and the dog, Bruiser.

Murphy was taken to Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn and pronounced dead at 10:47 p.m. The dog died on the scene.

He was a popular musician, a member of a number of bands. He was also a music teacher. Since 2000, he was a member of the Larkin and Moran Brothers, a popular band in Mount Greenwood. Other bands Murphy has been a member of include "Leave."

HIs friends knew him as Murph.

A 23-year-old Chicago man

A 23-year-old Chicago man has turned himself in and has been charged in connection with the fatal hit-and-run.

Jephious Morris, of the 4900 block of West Superior Street, was charged June 9 with two counts: leaving the scene of an accident with a death and one count of filing a false police report (according to police, Morris reported his vehicle stolen after the hit-and-run).
