Ridge Run around the corner

The Beverly Area Planning Association’s 31st Annual Ridge Run kicks off on Memorial Day, Mon., May 26, with its new 10K course introduced last year and certified by USA Track and Field.
The 10K run begins at 8 a.m., the youth mile for children ages 6 through 12 begin at 8:10 a.m., and the 5K run/walk begins at 9:30 a.m. All races will start and finish at Ridge Park, 97th and Longwood Drive.
A bungalow renaissance

For many Chicagoans, the warmth of home is found in a bungalow. Bungalows are memories of baking chocolate chip cookies at grandma's house, block parties on Independence Day, the smell of babies and friendly, familiar, smiling faces. They are constant reminders of the past.
"People long for the kinds of things they remember as children," said realtor Mark Ahlheim about homebuyers and their attraction to bungalows.

Retired police officer Gerald McLaughlin was vacationing in Mexico with his wife when he realized he couldn't feel his face.
The 63-year-old Portage Park native was standing at a hotel bar the evening of March 12 when his beverage began to spill out of his mouth.
"I took a sip, and it felt like my lips were totally full of Novocain," McLaughlin said. "The liquid went in and just came right back out."

The Beverly Arts Center can keep young minds learning, creating and having fun during its Summer Arts Experience, a top-of-the-line interdisciplinary art camp offering music, drama, dance, ceramics, computers, film and visual arts for children age 5 to 12 years in five two-week sessions.

The Southwest Observer is commemorating its one-year anniversary, kicked off by the annual South Side Irish Parade.
West Beverly native and professional journalist Michael Fielding and Web designer Steve Delmont joined nearly 120 other entrants in the 30th annual South Side Irish Parade, marching proudly down Western Avenue before more than 250,000 onlookers March 9.

The Bagpipes and Drums of the Chicago Police Department's Emerald Society - which participates annually at the South Side Irish Parade - stopped by TR's Pub in Mount Greenwood a few hours after the 30th annual parade concluded March 9. This is a clip of the group's moving performance for the hometown crowd.
BAC spring classes begin soon

The Beverly Arts Center School of the Arts spring session begins the week of March 30, offering nearly 150 fine arts classes for preschoolers through seniors in visual arts, dance, music, theater, digital art, movement, and literary arts. Classes are taught at the center at 2407 W. 111th St., and registration is open.

Mayor Daley and the Cook County Board of Review announced Wednesday a special property re-assessment period that could result in lower taxes for homeowners - good news for residents of Mount Greenwood, Beverly and Morgan Park whose assessments likely skyrocketed in the last year after the housing boom.
