Community service & world travels for Beverly teen
In just the last couple years, Beverly's Joseph Alfano, has spent time on three separate continents. But despite the exotic locales - Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico and Australia - it wasn't entirely for pleasure.
Unlike many high school and college students who spend their spring breaks traveling and partying, Alfano has spent his volunteering.
The Br. Rice senior spent five weeks this summer in Thailand and Vietnam. In 2008 he did an extensive amount of volunteer work in Mexico (where he volunteered at an orphanage) and Australia (where he helped marine biologists research the Minke whale).
He's also been recognized for his community service by earning the Cook County Sheriff's Youth Service Medal of Honor.
Alfano's story was featured in today's Daily Southtown's "Stellar Student" section.
Congratulations to Joe.

Algeria is not generally...
Back to page topAlgeria is not generally considered to be a tourist destination. Despite a gradual decline in violence between the 1990s and now, there has been an increase over the last four years in attacks directed specifically at foreigners. A copycat Al-Qaeda organisation has orchestrated violent attacks on UN workers and Americans in particular. That being said, for those who can't avoid travel to the region, Algeria is not short on sightseeing opportunities.

This tropical and very remote destination steeped in history was initially discovered in 1501 by Portuguese seafarer Joao da Nova Castelia, only to be rediscovered two years later on Ascension Day by Alphonse d'Albuquerque.

Back to page topGuinea-Bissau is a tiny country on the coast of west Africa bordered by Senegal to the north and Guinea to the south.
Very few people come here but those that do travel to Guinea-Bissau describe it as one of Africa's true gems, a land of great beauty, variety and warm welcomes. Chief highlights include the beautiful and mostly unspoiled beaches, abundant wildlife including significant populations of chimpanzees and rare salt-water hippopotamuses, and elegantly decaying colonial architecture from the Portuguese era.
