Ridge Run around the corner

Categorized under:

The Beverly Area Planning Association’s 31st Annual Ridge Run kicks off on Memorial Day, Mon., May 26, with its new 10K course introduced last year and certified by USA Track and Field.

The 10K run begins at 8 a.m., the youth mile for children ages 6 through 12 begin at 8:10 a.m., and the 5K run/walk begins at 9:30 a.m. All races will start and finish at Ridge Park, 97th and Longwood Drive.

“The Ridge Run is known as one of Chicago’s friendliest races because thousands of Beverly/Morgan Park neighbors line the route, playing motivating music, cheering on the runners and offering water throughout the course,” said Beverly Area Planning Association Executive Director, Matt Walsh.

More than 3,500 runners are expected to compete in the event. “With a run up Chicago’s highest hill providing a unique challenge among Chicago 10Ks and the cash prizes for top finishers, the Ridge Run attracts some very competitive runners.”

Participants can register on-line or print an application at www.bapa.org. The cost is $30 for the 10K Run and 5K Run/Walk by Sunday, May 25, or $35 the day of the race. The cost is $15 for the Youth Mile by Sunday, May 25, or $20 the day of the race.

Registration will be held until a half hour prior to each race.

The 10K Run and 5k Run/Walk are chip timed. Overall males and females will be awarded cash prizes and a plaque. Top three males and females in each age category will receive medals.

Following the races, Ridge Run participants will enjoy a variety of refreshments, including bagels, oranges, bananas, granola bars and yogurt sponsored by local vendors.

Sponsors will also be on-site to conduct warm-ups, stretching, and blood pressure screenings. Children can participate in the Tot Run at 10:15 a.m. as well as the very popular Teddy Bear Clinic conducted by Little Company of Mary Hospital & Health Care Centers.

Following the race, participants and spectators can enjoy the Beverly/Morgan Park Memorial Day Parade, one of the oldest neighborhood parades in the City of Chicago. At the end of the parade, a color guard and special ceremony to honor the men and women, who have served or are serving in the United States Armed Services.
