Sounding off

Now that the old Grand Trunk Western Railroad will be a train horn abatement area from 87th and Kedzie to 103rd Street just north of Mount Greenwood (joining an abatement area on the old Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from 87th to 99th along Maplewood near Beverly), area residents will be able to sleep a little easier. Both abatement areas have been created at the request of the Village of Evergreen Park. Is there a need for the city to request such an abatement for both lines as they continue through Mount Greenwood and Beverly?

For the safety of the people

For the safety of the people who walk along the train tracks, I am against the abatement plan. When people buy houses near or around railroad tracks, part of the deal is that there is going to be a lot of noise at times. That is most likely how they bought their homes so cheap.

The beat leader for Police Beat 2211 announced that many kids play around the tracks and risk their lives by daring each other to lay on one side of the tracks while the train is coming the other way. Taking away the sound would worsen that problem.
