Hey, Mr. Postman
The other day the Daily Southtown featured a mail carrier from the Mount Greenwood station who lamented about the days gone by when his van was full of packages, like a government Santa Claus. They were the good old days, the sentiment went. But in my experience, Mount Greenwood's letter carriers - and specifically the post office itself - are among the most disappointing in the city.
The carrier - whose coworkers make on average $67,000 annually - told the paper that a lot has changed over the years. And it has: The Postal Service has experienced a 10-billion item decrease just from last year alone, and overall the amount of mail in Chicago has decreased by about 5%.
But the frustrations haven't. Several times a month I open my mail box to find neighbors' letters while she regularly calls my wife to tell her that she's got some mail waiting next door.
And forget about making a "quick" stop at the post office on 111th Street. Last week eight of us stood in line as one clerk assisted customers while the other two decided to step in the back room for a few minutes. Only after 10 minutes did I realize that the credit card system was down ... and even then I only happened to overhear one of the clerks alert a coworker of that fact. They never even made a public announcement to those of us in line, credit cards in hand and blood boiling over.
I've never experienced this level of incompetence in any other ZIP code in the city.
The U.S. Postal Service is considering eliminating one of the six days of the week that mail is delivered, and some post office locations might even be on the chopping block.
Too bad the Postal Service isn't considering eliminating some of the most inefficient mail carriers in the city ... who happen to be delivering what little mail is left in the 60655 ZIP code.

Mount Greenwood is certainly...
Back to page topMount Greenwood is certainly not the only place where this happens. I applied for a credit card and the bank told me it will be delivered to me in a week. I waited. Called the bank after two weeks only to be told that the mail man should have delivered it by now. I called the post office and they confirmed that the letter was sent. I asked the mail man and he said there wasn't such a mail. I went back to the bank and applied for a credit card instant decision and annulled the first card. Almost half a year later I check the mail box of one of my neighbors that's moved away. Guess what! I find my envelope in there, two mail boxes away from mine. It's clearly the fault of the mail man.
Lived in Mt.Greenwood from...
Back to page topLived in Mt.Greenwood from 86-02 glad to see that the post delivery has not changed! They are by far one of the WORST in the area.
We're all in this together....
Back to page topWe're all in this together. I get letters that were intended for my neighbors constantly. The situation won't change anytime soon. Even though they are losing business to the internet, the USPS is still a monopoly for regular mail delivery. Monopoly = lackluster service.
Well, I have no complaints...
Back to page topWell, I have no complaints about our mail carrier....he's actually a nice guy. The post office is another story. I'm a stickler for good customer service...and there's none to be had there. Those people are sssssllllloooowwwww. What a shame.
I wish I had a better report...
Back to page topI wish I had a better report to give but unfortunately I don't. I too get other peoples mail and it happens a few times a week! My neighbor has experienced her magazines coming hours after her regular mail is delivered, indicating to her that it is being read first and then delivered later in the day, at least she gets it eventually right? I have also mailed invitations out from the Mount Greenwood Post Office and had many people either received the invitations weeks later or not at all. I now take the time to drive to the Worth Post Office to ensure my mail will arrive in a timely manner.
