When will it stop?

Categorized under:

Tis the season to decorate our abodes with witches and goblins and spooky creatures. . .Tis the season for vandalism. . .My neighbor spent a couple of hours decorating her front porch with scarecrows, beautiful mums, and of course, pumpkins.
Early the next morning, I found her pumpkins smashed and scattered all over the street and across the street.
Is anything sacred anymore? The children do not have anything better to do than to walk the streets and find other peoples personal property and destroy it??
I am excited to go and buy my pumpkins and carve them, but should I put them outside? Or do I need to keep them inside my home so I can enjoy them without the worry of vandalism?
Just a thought.

In the last few weeks there

In the last few weeks there have just been a handful of thefts and property damage ... or at least those are the only crimes that have been reported. I checked with the CAPS office at the 22nd District, and the police admit that it's difficult to accurately track these kinds of crimes because not everyone reports them.

These types of reports always increase during both the Halloween and Christmas seasons, but that doesn't mean that neighbors should just accept it. Make sure that whenever you see suspicious activity that you call it in.

I'd say put the pumpkins out. Enjoy the season. But keep an eye out. If you suspect that there may be an incident - no matter how minor it seems - call the police at (312) 745-0710.

We had a party earlier this year, and a full cooler was stolen from our backyard. We called the police, and they arrived within minutes. They helped track down the kids who took it, and the whole thing was resolved.

A quick patrol of the neighborhood is always a good way to deter the local kids from messing around with someone else's property.
